Salt Spray Testing
Salt Spray Testing is typically done by manufacturers to determine whether a part will survive the corrosive environment that it will be subjected to when it is placed into actual service (on an automobile, for example). A salt spray chamber having the capability to cycle a part through years of expected corrosive environments can serve to simulate a lifetime of real world conditions in a very short time.
Salt Spray Testing done according to ASTM B117 in our specially designed test chamber is performed to determine the relative resistance to corrosion of your coated or uncoated metallic parts. These tests can tell you your actual corrosion rate (versus the expected rate).
Salt Spray Testing can also serve to verify a production process (such as anodising). Plated or painted automotive parts are one example of parts that can be tested to determine whether a coating process is correctly configured to coat parts effectively, verifying this stage of production.
"The salt spray fog test, when it's used properly, is one of the most valuable corrosion tests in the world. It has impacted all industries. It has been very valuable in terms of quality control and comparative behavior materials and that's in all walks of life: in the automotive, aircraft and compliance industries, in transportation and infrastructure. Paint coatings are used in all of these industries."
